Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) when looking for a mental health counselor.

How do I find a counselor that’s a good fit for me?

Schedule an initial session to see if you feel comfortable and if their approach aligns with your needs. Trust your instincts—feeling heard, understood, safe, and respected is crucial.

How long will I need to go to therapy?

It depends on the issue and your goals. Some people find short-term therapy helpful for specific problems, while others may engage in longer-term therapy for deeper exploration and ongoing support.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential. Therapists are required by law to protect your privacy. However, there are exceptions: if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if there’s suspicion of abuse, they may be required by law to break confidentiality.

What should I expect in a counseling session?

Therapy is a space to discuss feelings, thoughts, behaviors, or challenges in a safe and supportive space. It’s a collaborative process, and you set the pace. Sessions typically last 50–60 minutes and typically start with a conversation about what’s going on and your overall goals.

How much does therapy cost?

Your out-of-pocket cost can vary depending on whether you have insurance or if you’re looking to self-pay for sessions. Regardless, InBloom Counseling works with you to find an approach that can work. Ask about the cost of sessions, cancellation policies, and insurance coverage during your initial consultation.

Can therapy help with specific issues like anxiety or depression?

Yes, therapy can be highly effective for treating anxiety, depression, and a range of other mental health issues. Evidence-based therapies like CBT, DBT, and mindfulness techniques are often used to treat these conditions. EMDR is another technique available to you at InBloom that’s approved to treat trauma.

What types of therapy are available?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Focuses on changing negative thought patterns.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Helps manage emotions and relationships.
Rational Emotive Behavior (REBT): Helps emotional suffering and promotes healthier thinking, self-acceptance, and resilience.
Solution-Focused Therapy (SFBT): Targets immediate problems and solutions.
Family Therapy: Involves family members in the therapeutic process.
Group Therapy: Sessions conducted with a group of people with similar issues.

What if there is something that I don’t want to talk about?

You control the pace of therapy. While it’s important to remember your therapeutic relationship is a safe space to address difficult issues, you shouldn’t feel forced to talk about anything before you’re ready. A good counselor will respect your boundaries and help you feel comfortable over time.
